Packing for a move can be expensive. Between the boxes, the packing tape, and the bubble wrap, it’s easy to run up a hefty bill. But don’t worry – there are plenty of ways to save money while you’re moving! Aside from a moving company or truck, most expenses when moving are catered to the packing materials. In this blog post, we will discuss some of our favorite moving hacks while on a budget.

Boxes
If you are packing for yourself as opposed to using a moving company, one of the best ways to save money while packing is to reuse boxes and other packing materials. If you can, try to collect good boxes from friends, family members, or local businesses. Businesses receive many boxes that they typically just break down and dispose of. Oftentimes, they are more than willing to give the boxes away for those that need them. If that’s not an option, then check online for assistance in finding boxes.
Using the same-sized boxes is a great idea because they can stack perfectly together. You can also purchase new boxes from moving companies or stores like Home Depot or Lowe’s. However, be sure to shop around and compare prices before purchasing boxes.
Wardrobe boxes are a great option to protect clothing while they can hang. Be sure to label all boxes on all sides, a sharpie is the cheapest way to label boxes.

Packing Tape
Another great way to save money while packing is by being strategic with the packing tape. It’s easy to go overboard, just make sure the boxes are completely sealed. In most cases, a few strips on the bottom and top will do the trick. It’s also helpful to use the tape sparingly on boxes that aren’t heavy or fragile. For example, a box filled with clothes doesn’t need as much packing tape as one containing dishes and glassware.

Packing and Reusable Material
The goal of using packing material is to protect your belongings as well as fill in any open spaces inside the boxes. There are many materials to use for packing. It is recommended to avoid using packing peanuts in moving boxes because they are lightweight and can easily get everywhere if the box is not sealed appropriately. If you do choose to use packing peanuts, be sure to seal the boxes tightly and pack them in a sturdy container. A different option is to use wrapping paper as an alternative to packing peanuts.

Packing Strategically
Another great way to save money while moving is to pack your belongings strategically.
Here are a few examples:
- You can pack heavier items on the bottom of boxes and lighter items on top.
- Dishes and other glassware must be packed securely.
- Mirrors can be kept in specific boxes for mirrors or you can place them with pictures and bubble wrap or paper pads.
- You can also place fragile items in bubble wrap or newspaper for extra protection.
To save even more money, use clothing or linens to wrap your fragile belongings. Packing slowly and methodically will help you stay organized and avoid wasting money on unnecessary packing materials.
Finally, don’t forget to shop around for moving services or storage units if you think you may need one. You can save on your budget if you’re willing to pack for yourself or pick up boxes from your local store instead of ordering them online or having them delivered to your home.
